CITY GROUND, NOTTINGHAM — Liverpool's winless run now stands at five Premier League games after a 1-0 loss at Nottingham Forest.

The day started at 05:15 for Jurgen Klopp, with Thiago Alcantara reporting an ear infection that kept him out, while Darwin Nunez failed a late fitness test. A massive injury list combined with rotation places means Liverpool are without three of their four best attackers, the same figure in midfield and three of their five strongest defenders.

However, they were in relatively high spirits after picking up back-to-back wins over Manchester City and West Ham United last week. The absentees did, however, with a disappointing performance in which there was a real lack of quality potential.

Forest - who were rooted to the foot of the table and without a win in nine - had the better of the first half. Liverpool dominated possession, but completely lacked intensity, while the East Midlands club predictably made up for it, ruthlessly biting down every challenge and creating solid chances on the break.

Morgan Gibbs-White showed his class, turning on the style by flicking the balls around and hunting the killer through the ball. He combined that with constant pursuit, always breaking forward with strength on the counter, while always seven behind Liverpool. Conversely, the oft-maligned Serge Aurier had an equally impressive performance alongside Fabio Carvalho.

Liverpool started the second half with a much-needed spring in their step, but were soon halted by Taiwo Aouni. The man who scored Forest's only other win this term - here in August against West Ham United - repeated the trick, this time chasing his former club. The 25-year-old was sent out on seven loan moves during his time at Liverpool, for which he never made a senior appearance.

The Nigerian striker initially found himself brutally brought down on the halfway line by Joe Gomez, just as he found a free run towards goal. The ball from the resulting free-kick went wide to the left, low to Aouni, whose first-time stab hit the post. But the rebound fell kindly for the No.9, who made no mistake at the second attempt.

The man who eventually replaced Aouniyi, Brennan Johnson's ferocious presence had the chance to wrap up the game after Gibbs-White and Cheikhou Kouette——impressive across central midfield—burst down the left and played in the striker. Allison denied him well, as she did for Ryan Yates later in the proceedings.

Liverpool have pushed of late, particularly with a trio of chances for Virgil van Dijk — a real concern in itself that suggests the Dutchman is their brightest attacking threat. But Klopp's men finished with no more shots on target than Forest, who were deserved winners in the opening game of the Premier League weekend.

The three points lift Forest above local rivals Leicester City into 19th place, while Liverpool are 11 points behind leaders Arsenal with a game in hand.
